The Jane Goodall Institute-Tanzania awarded more than $2.7 Million (USD) by the Royal Norvegian Embassy

Arlington, Virginia—The Royal Norwegian Embassy in Tanzania recently awarded more than $2.7 million (USD) to the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI)-Tanzania.  The three-year grant will enable JGI to provide local community-based organizations and district governments with the training, equipment and other materials needed to protect their forestland and—ultimately— benefit from income earned through the sale of carbon credits through the financing mechanism known as Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD).  REDD was a hot topic at the recent UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, which was attended by world-renowned primatologist and conservationist Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE, founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and UN Messenger of Peace.

The Jane Goodall Institute awarded grant from the U.S. Agency for International Development

Arlington, Virginia—The Jane Goodall Institute is proud to announce receipt of a four-year grant from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) for work beginning January 4, 2010.  The grant, totaling more than $5.5 million (USD) will enable the Institute—in partnership with the Tanzanian District Councils of Kigoma and Mpanda, The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and the Frankfurt Zoological Society—to expand its existing community-centered conservation programs in western Tanzania, home to important populations of chimpanzees and other endangered species.

Jane Goodall brings her message to Copenhagen

Jane Goodall, Ph.D., DBE, founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and UN Messenger of Peace, has put her global tour on hold to travel to Copenhagen, Denmark, for the UN Climate Change Conference.  Scheduled to appear at a number of side events later this week and next, Dr. Goodall will use the occasion to emphasize the importance of engaging local communities in efforts to protect tropical forests, the destruction of which is a major contributor to global warming.

Jane Goodall urges Canadian business leaders to protect iconic species by changing business practices

Dr. Jane Goodall, speaking today at a luncheon attended by some of Canada's biggest names in publishing and printing, expressed her concern for the world's dwindling species and the need to act quickly to protect iconic animals such as chimpanzees, bears, and caribou. Dr. Goodall, in Toronto to promote her new book, joined leading Canadian environmental organization Canopy to enjoin some of Canada's private sector heavy hitters, including Phillip Crawley, CEO of the Globe and Mail and Joel Silver, President of Indigo Books & Music, to take action for wildlife and habitat conservation both here in Ontario as well as around the world.

Dr. Jane Goodall to cheer on children of all ages as they clean the Humber Bay Shoreline during the TD Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup

(Toronto, ON) Renowned primatologist, humanitarian and environmentalist, Dr. Jane Goodall will be in Toronto in order to promote her new book, Hope for Animals and their World, as well as cheer on Roots & Shoots groups as they clean the shoreline along Humber Bay, from Palace Pier to Parklawn Road. Roots & Shoots was started by Jane Goodall in order to empower young people around the world to create their own positive change for people, animals and the environment. Staff from Roots will also roll up their sleeves and collect trash as part of Roots Cares, a long-term partnership between Roots and the Jane Goodall Institute.

Gombe Research Continues to Break Ground Nearly 50 Years Later

(Arlington, VA) –The latest research findings from Gombe, Tanzania, demonstrate, yet again, the value of one of the longest uninterrupted field studies of a wild animal species.  In a paper published July 23, 2009, in the journal Nature, a consortium of scientists led by Dr. Beatrice Hahn of the University of Alabama and including renowned primatologist and conservationist Dr. Jane Goodall, researchers from the Jane Goodall Institute’s (JGI) Gombe Stream Research Centre, University of Minnesota, the Lincoln Park Zoo, Tanzania National Parks and six other institutions found that wild chimpanzees naturally infected with Simian Immunodeficiency Viruses (SIV) can suffer from an AIDS-like illness.

The Jane Goodall Institute mourns the passing of Grégoire, Africa's oldest-known chimpanzee

December 18, 2008

(Toronto, ON) It is with heavy hearts that the staff of the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) announced today the passing of Gregoire, the oldest-known chimpanzee living in Africa and a dear friend of the entire JGI family.  Gregoire, who was approximately 66 years old, died peacefully in his sleep yesterday at JGI’s Tchimpounga Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Center alongside his long-time companion Clara.  Gregoire had lived at the sanctuary in the Republic of Congo for the past 11 years.

Joint Initiative Aims to Protect Endangered Great Apes

 

Renowned primatologist Jane Goodall, Ph.D., DBE, will serve as the official patron of the 2009 Year of the Gorilla (YoG), a 12-month campaign aimed at improving conservation of humankind’s closest relatives and their habitats by bettering the livelihoods and incomes of local people.  His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco launched the YoG initiative December 1 at the opening of a United Nations wildlife conference in Rome, Italy.

(TORONTO) –  Michael Budman and Don Green, co-founders and co-owners of Roots Canada, announced the launch of the Reason for Hope Tribute Dinner campaign in honour of Dr. Jane Goodall, renowned primatologist and global environmental advocate.  At a reception held at Roots global headquarters last night, dinner co-chairs, Michael Budman and Don Green, along with their respective wives Diane Bald and Denyse Green, inspired those in attendance to give big to the event that will be held in Toronto on November 16.

Incredible Opportunity for Canadian Teachers in Uganda

Canadians to Train Ugandan Teachers to Deliver Environmental Education Programs

A pilot project by the Jane Goodall Institute of Canada (JGI) will see three Canadian teachers travelling to Uganda this summer to assist in the delivery of an environmental education workshop for Ugandan teachers. Emma Roche from Royal St. George’s College, Toronto, Meg O’Mahony from University of Toronto School and Alison Elliott from Trinity College School in Port Hope, Ontario will travel to Uganda on July 3rd for two weeks.

Delta Chelsea Managing Director Raises $25,000 for the Jane Goodall Institute

On Monday, May 12, renowned primatologist, environmentalist and UN Messenger of Peace Dr. Jane Goodall was in Toronto to receive a cheque for $25,369 from Josef Ebner, Regional Vice-President and Managing Director at the Delta Chelsea, Canada’s largest hotel. The cheque was the sum total of the funds raised by Mr. Ebner as sponsorship of his climb of Aconcagua in January.

Jane Goodall Institute Presents to All-Party International Conservation Caucus

“The African rainforests—the lungs of our planet—are being destroyed,” said Dr. Keith Martin, M.P. and Chair of the All Party International Conservation Caucus.  Despite the fact that the rich Congo River Basin supports the livelihoods of more than 62 million people its forests continue to be logged at unsustainable rates.

The Jane Goodall Institute of Canada (JGI Canada) estimates that the Congo Basin includes some of the largest intact forests in the world, including 26% of the world’s remaining rainforest.  This region, which includes parts of five African countries, harbors a tremendous diversity of life.

The partnership will involve collaborations on teaching and research, sharing of information on JGI's conservation programs in Africa, and opportunities for U of T students to contribute to JGI's programs around the world.
