Jane Goodall Institute teachers workshops in Uganda

Uganda faces huge environmental challenges such as deforestation, agriculture intensification and other human threats to endangered primates such as chimpanzees and mountain gorillas.

JGI Uganda works with local schools and communities in areas where prime chimpanzee habitats are found in order to increase awareness about environmental issues.

JGI Uganda, in collaboration with JGI Canada, has developed a teacher-training workshop targeting primary-school teachers. The interactive and highly-collaborative workshop focuses on developing lesson plans, games and activities about the environment that children can understand. The Uganda teachers then go back to their schools and train other teachers.

The main objectives of the workshop are:

  • Introduce participants (25 – 30 teachers) to environmental education
  • Explore a variety of effective teaching methods
  • Familiarize participants with the Teachers Guide
  • Supply participants with basic facilitation skills
  • Equip attendees to train other teachers
  • To take participants into the forest

In order to cover the operational costs of the workshop, each team (two teachers) of Canadian teachers must raise $US 5,000.00 prior to departure. The first workshop took place in July 2008 and based its success; a second group went in March 2009 and two more teams traveled to Uganda in July 2009 to train even more teachers about the importance of environmental education. This year, three additional workshops will be organized in March & July.
