Uganda : Participate in an Environmental Education Program for Primary School Teachers
We are looking for several highly motivated teachers to work with the Jane Goodall Institute to participate in a teacher training programs in Uganda. There will be two opportunities to be part of this program in 2010: the first is over March Break 2010; the second is a for a period of three weeks, dates to be determined, in July. The program will focus on the use of learner-centred teaching methods as well as the integration of Environmental Education into the Uganda Primary School Curriculum (UPSC).
These workshops are organized by the Jane Goodall Institute of Uganda, with support from the Jane Goodall Institute of Canada.
The Program in Uganda:
The first week would be an orientation for the teachers to familiarize themselves with Uganda and the Jane Goodall Institute’ s educational programs at the JGI office in Entebbe. This will include classroom visits and meeting with primary school teachers in Entebbe in order to gain a better understanding of the classroom setting in Uganda.
The workshops will be run on the second week in Masindi District and will run from Monday to Thursday with a field visit in between. Return to Entebbe on Friday.
The workshops will be held in rural parts of Uganda, and will cover the material laid out in teacher’s guides produced by JGI as well as the fundamentals of cooperative learning techniques.
The July program will follow a similar format.
Qualifications Required:
- A relevant Teaching Certificate and exposure to environmental education.
- Hands on experience with delivering workshops and/or training programs.
- A sound understanding of learner-centred teaching methods especially cooperative learning.
- Travel and/or work experience in developing countries is an asset, as is an understanding of social justice and environmental issues in a developing country context.
- A commitment to the goals and principles of the Jane Goodall Institute.
- Flexibility, strong constitution and sense of humour essential!
Expectations Upon Return:
- To meet with the JGI staff in Canada to debrief the experience.
- To be prepared to make at least one presentation at your home school as well as other local schools in your area.
- Work towards establishing a Roots & Shoots club at your school.
- Assist with ongoing fundraising for future workshops and environmental education programs in Africa.
Costs
- The team will be responsible for fundraising $US 5,000 to support the cost of each workshop.
- Airfare: Each teacher will be responsible for his or her own airfare
- Accommodation and Food: Approximately $1000
- Tour: Approximately $750 - $2000 (Depending on what the group would like to do)
- Visas: Approximately $50
- Vaccinations: Prices will vary depending on what you need. This may be covered by your school medical plans
- Personal expenses

In your cover letter, please outline your motivation, relevant developing country experience and how you plan to use this experience upon your return in order to raise awareness of issues in Africa. Please also indicate whether you are interested in the March or July trip, or both.
The selection and interview process will take place in the last week of October/early November 2009 and the candidates that have been selected for the March trip will be informed by the end of November at the latest. More information about the program will be provided upon this point.

Canada - Translator English to French
Job Summary
The translator will be responsible for translating various forms of documentation from English to French
Duties and Responsibilities
- Translate documents such as Institute newsletters, field reports etc...
- Translate documents from other Jane Goodall Institutes from around the world
Job Requirements
- Mastery of written French and English, including good grammar, structure, spelling, punctuation, vocabulary and comprehension
- Able to adopt various writing styles depending on the type of publication and its audience
- Deal well with deadlines
- Efficient
- Basic computer skills
- Access to a computer and the Internet
Availability:
- The volunteer would work from home with agreed upon deadlines for submission of translations.

Tanzania - Roots & Shoots Internship
Location: Dar es Salaam, Moshi
Status: Minimum 6 month commitment. Start dates: mid-January, mid-April and mid-October Applications accepted on a rolling basis.
• Support local R&S clubs through attending club meetings, assisting with project creation and implementation, and making educational presentations. Successful projects have included: cleaning beaches and schoolyards, bird watching, tree planting, creating school gardens, visiting orphanages and hospitals, field trips to natural areas, and campaigns to raise awareness of local environmental and social issues such as HIV/AIDS and bushmeat.
• Represent R&S in the local community through conducting presentations, teaching workshops, exhibiting at a community event, visiting new schools who are interested in joining the program, or participating in partner organization’s events.
• Aid in the planning, preparation and implementation of annual R&S events such as International Peace Day, African Child Day, and Roots & Shoots week.
• Develop and implement a volunteer project in collaboration with local R&S groups.
• Assist with on-going projects such at the R&S scholarship program
• Assist with general office administrative tasks
Experience/Qualifications:
• Experience in one or more of the following areas: Roots & Shoots, community development, teaching, sciences, conservation, event planning, grant writing, computers/technology, administrative support
• The ideal volunteer will be mature, flexible, self-motivated, adapt to new environments easily, willing to work hard, culturally sensitive, have a sense of humor, and willing to do whatever tasks need to be done
• Experience working in Africa or a developing country a plus
• Must be 21 years of age or older
Terms:
Interns contributes the following fee to the Jane Goodall Institute: $2,900 for six months and $350 for every additional month. This fee will help to cover living expenses during your time in Tanzania.
