Internships

The Jane Goodall Institute of Canada (JGI) and the University of Toronto’s Centre for Environment have entered into a research and teaching partnership, with JGI’s national office now located at the University of Toronto.

The partnership involves collaborations on teaching and research, sharing of information on JGI’s conservation programs in Africa, and opportunities for U of T students to contribute to JGI’s programs around the world.

IMPORTANT

Roots & Shoots First Nations Intern - Toronto

Position Description:

JGI supports wildlife research, education and conservation in Africa. The Institute’s youth network—Roots & Shoots—provides resources, training and support to empower Canadian youth to take action on local and global issues.

JGI is seeking a student to support its recently launched First Nations initiative. Through a partnership with the Assembly of First Nations, we will be rolling out Roots & Shoots across First Nations (FN) communities in Canada. The intern will help conduct the groundwork to get this initiative underway.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research on existing  community projects and organizations in FN communities
  • Assist with outreach activities to FN communities where there is no Roots & Shoots presence
  • Assist in communicating with FN representatives where Roots & Shoots already exists
  • Assist in identifying priority needs for FN community projects
  • Assist in developing leadership capacity in FN communities to engage in environmental activities
  • Work with Roots & Shoots staff to help implement community programming

Qualifications:

  • Excellent research and analytical skills
  • Excellent communications and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and Internet
  • Capable of working independently and as a team member
  • An interest in the goals and principles of the Jane Goodall Institute
  • Experience in aboriginal youth engagement considered a strong asset

Roots & Shoots Outreach Intern - Toronto

JGI supports wildlife research, education and conservation in Africa. The Institute’s youth network—Roots & Shoots—provides resources, training and support to empower Canadian youth to take action on local and global issues.

 

Position Description:

JGI is seeking a student to support outreach initiatives for Roots & Shoots. The student will work independently to research, develop and deliver educational presentations on a variety of topics to a range of audiences (primarily students and teachers). Presentation topics could include themes such as: endangered species, water conservation, forest management and youth engagement.

Responsibilities:

  • Identify, evaluate and refine existing outreach materials
  • Conduct research on relevant topics related to the Institute’s mission and campaign themes
  • Develop outreach materials customized for different age groups and presentation formats
  • Deliver presentations to primary and secondary schools and community groups

Qualifications:

  • Excellent research and analytical skills
  • Excellent communications and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and Internet
  • Capable of working independently and as a team member
  • An interest in the goals and principles of the Jane Goodall Institute
  • Experience in youth outreach considered a strong asset

Advocacy Intern - Toronto

JGI supports wildlife research, education and conservation in Africa, and is committed to advocacy and youth engagement in Canada.

Position Description

JGI is seeking a student to support JGI’s advocacy efforts around the use of chimpanzees in the entertainment industry. The student will work independently to research companies who employ chimpanzees; draft letters on behalf of JGI to offending companies; develop information tools and deliver presentations to youth groups.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research on the use of chimpanzees in the entertainment industry in general
  • Research Canadian companies involved in using chimpanzees and other exotic animals in their advertising
  • Draft letters to send to companies involved
  • Reach out to other organizations involved in animal protection
  • Create materials such as fact sheets, information kits and content for web
  • Develop a presentation customized for different age groups and presentation formats
  • Deliver presentations to Roots & Shoots groups (JGI’s youth engagement program) on the topic of chimpanzees in entertainment

Qualifications:

  • Excellent research and analytical skills
  • Excellent writing, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and Internet
  • Capable of working independently and as a team member
  • An interest in the goals and principles of the Jane Goodall Institute
